Read more recommendations »

Elephantine Island is located on the Nile, opposite the city of Aswan, and is one of the oldest inhabited places in southern Egypt. In Antiquity, the island had a strategic position on the southern border of pharaonic Egypt, close to the trade routes toward Nubia and inner Africa. The site preserves archaeological remains from several periods, including temples, walls, dwellings, nilometers and vestiges connected with Egyptian administration. The island is also important for its link with the god Khnum, a deity associated with the Nile cataracts and creation. The Unfinished Obelisk is located in the ancient granite quarries of Aswan and is one of the most important sites for understanding construction techniques in ancient Egypt.
