Bahariya Oasis, also known as the “Northern Oases”, is one of the most fascinating natural destinations in the Western Desert of Egypt, located approximately 370 km from Cairo. This spectacular depression, with an area of about 2,000 km², impresses with its contrasting landscapes: mountains surrounding the valley, natural springs and expanses of lush vegetation in the middle of the desert.
Today, Bahariya is a vibrant oasis, where nature, traditions and history harmoniously intertwine. Agriculture plays an important role in the lives of the locals, with the region being famous for its date, mango, guava and olive crops. Bahariya is made up of several picturesque villages, of which El Bawiti is the administrative centre and main access point for tourists. Nearby are other authentic communities, where the traditional way of life has remained largely unchanged.
The local culture is rich and authentic, with traditional music and customs still present in daily life. The local community, known as the Waḥātī, maintains a distinct cultural identity, influenced by the region’s long history.
